A tiny secret that changed how I showed up in my life
In the fall of 2013, I was diagnosed with incurable cancer.
Lying on a hospital bed, recovering from an anesthetic, my oncologist pronounced a death sentence over me.
In a matter of seconds, my future was ripped out of my hands.
The first thing I did
I asked a nurse to bring me a pen and a piece paper. My life was hanging precariously in the balance…yet I wrote this list.
All the things I wanted to achieve in the next 5 years:
- Traveling.
- Publishing a book.
- Speaking on stages.
- Meeting a Beautiful Man.
The funny thing is, when it came to my health or wealth I had zero resources.
Who was I to think that I could pull it off? I was a cancer patient on my last legs!
But I made a decision.
I was ready to show up as my Big Me Self with Big Me Energy and step into my highest potential.
The moment I flipped the switch
I found something magical to wear during recovery with cancer.
…something like Dorothy’s sparkly red shoes. Or Cinderella’s glass slippers.
For me, it was a pair of sparkly pants...skin tight, midnight blue, sparkly, sequinned pants.
I wore them like a Super Hero Cape.
Even though technically I was a cancer patient with no hair and a big, ugly scar that spanned across my abdomen,
I saw my future so clearly whenever I wore those pants.
My world became so much brighter
Because I was literally clothing myself in my big dreams for the future.
My heart pounded out of my chest with excitement…like I was alive for the very first time in my life.
I was The Rebel, going against the code of what was socially and morally acceptable for a 50 year old woman to wear.
All of a sudden I no longer cared what anyone thought. I was the 'me' I always wanted to be.
I loved who I saw in the mirror. I love how I was showing up for myself, my body and my dreams. And all the people I would meet.
And the cancer patient? She was long gone!
How do I know?
People stopped me on the street to say, “Oh my Gosh, you look AMAZING!!!”
Every time I told them I just had Chemo Round #2, their mouths dropped open.
“Whatever you’re doing, it’s totally working for you! Keep going!!!”
The Crazy Things That Followed
In less than 6 months, I became 100% cancer free. That was over 10 years ago.
The really cool thing is…
I ended up doing everything on my bucket list.
- Traveling around the world
- Meeting a Beautiful Man
- Publishing a book
- Speaking on stages
